According to a CNN story posted today, the pilot for the ill-fated Dana Airways Abuja – Lagos flight was an American, the co-pilot was Indian and the flight engineer was Indonesian. Their names have not yet been released by the airlines
The information was released by Oscar Wason, Director of Operations for the airline, who also said that the plane seemed to have been experiencing engine trouble and sent out a distress message before crashing into the densely populated area of Iju, Lagos. The plane was approaching for landing when the disaster occurred.
It is believed that the crash killed all 153 passengers and crew on board, and that at least 10 people on the ground were killed as well. Details are still emerging as emergency crews worked to recover the bodies late into the night and today as well. and the death toll is likely to rise and the rescue workers get further into the rubble and reach the debris from the buildings.
Officials have yet to discover exactly how many people were in the streets or in the residents at the time, Mohammad Sani Sidi, emergency management director told CNN at the scene of the crash.
