A Global Comms Leader Helping Organisations In The UK And Africa Communicate For Impact.

As I stood on stage at the University of Reading, presenting an award to Aman Chahal, a placement student who worked with us from 2023 to 2024, I was reminded of my belief that the future of public relations lies in nurturing young talent. Aman’s journey from a finance student at Reading to an award-winning intern is not just a personal success; it’s a powerful example of how our industry can evolve and thrive.

Aman’s story with us began with his bold approach to securing an internship at BHM. Despite studying Accounting, his curiosity led him to explore PR. In a move that exemplifies the initiative we value in our industry, Aman engaged our CEO, Ayeni Adekunle, in a store in London, pitching himself for an internship.

Throughout his time with us, Aman demonstrated remarkable commitment, commuting from Reading to our London office. His unique perspective, stemming from his finance background, brought fresh insights to the team. This experience has reinforced my belief that embracing diverse backgrounds in PR is not just beneficial—it’s essential.

What makes Aman’s journey even more meaningful to me is that I am also a product of BHM’s investment in young talent. I started as an intern at BHM in 2016 and have since grown to lead the UK operations of the business. My own path reflects the potential that lies in investing in young professionals. It is this very focus on developing talent that has shaped my career and the careers of many others at BHM.

As agency leaders—especially those of us running small Independent consultancies in the UK and across Africa—we must create environments that foster potential and reward dedication. Aman’s story teaches us to be open to individuals from various academic backgrounds and to recognise the value of cross-disciplinary skills in enriching PR work.

For young professionals and students considering a career in PR, Aman’s experience demonstrates that curiosity and initiative can open doors, even for those without a traditional PR background. Internships offer invaluable opportunities to gain practical skills, industry insights, and build professional networks.

At BHM UK, we’ve seen firsthand how supporting young minds like Aman is not just about contributing to their growth; it’s an investment in the future of PR. Fresh perspectives and energy from interns and young professionals can invigorate our agencies and lead to innovative approaches in client work.

This experience has reinforced our dedication to encouraging young talent. We continue to seek passionate, curious individuals for our internship programme, viewing it as a key strategy for talent acquisition and employer branding. It’s not just about filling positions; it’s about shaping the future of our industry.

To those inspired by Aman’s story and interested in exploring opportunities in PR, I encourage you to take the first step. Apply maybe? – https://bhmng.bamboohr.com/careers

And to agency leaders, I urge you to keep your doors open.

The future of our industry depends on it.
