GIST FROM THE MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS 2012

She may be the quintessential girl next door but Taylor Swift was playing the bad girl at tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards.

The singer channelled her inner rock star as she dived into the crowd during a performance of her smash hit We Are Never Getting Back Together.

The 22-year-old country pop star closed the ceremony and made sure she ended the action-packed night with a bang.

Stealing the show: Taylor Swift performed her smash hit We Are Never Getting Back Together at the MTV VMAs tonight

Taylor had switched from her white tuxedo into a casual red and white striped T-shirt, tiny denim shorts and red brogues.

She started out her performance by singing in a mock studio before stepping out on the stage with her back up dancers.

At the end of her number one hit, Taylor gave a cheeky smile and then stage-dived into the very excited audience.

Leggy lady: Taylor put her pins on display in a pair of very short shorts which she teamed with a striped T-shirt

While Taylor’s performance may have stolen the show, several other singers tickled the crowd throughout the ceremony.

Rihanna kicked things off by opening the evening with a rendition of her new track Cockiness (I Love It) alongside A$AP Rocky.

She then mixed things up by heading into the audience to sing We Found Love – for which she won Video of the Year.

Calvin Harris, who collaborated on the track with the star, played DJ during the evening, and took home a trophy of his own in the form of Best Electronic Dance Music Video for his hit track Feels So Close.

Alicia Keys delivered a moving duet of Girl on Fire with Nicki Minaj and the pair had a very special guest.

Olympic gold medallist Gabby Douglas showed off some of her incredible gymnastics skills during the song as she tumbled across the stage.

Pink performed her new single Blow Me (One Last Kiss) and made sure she had a show-stopping exit as she was hoisted off on a pair of giant red lips.

The singer also went back to her roots and sang a segment from her 2001 hit Get The Party Started.

Meanwhile One Direction, who swept the board with three trophies tonight, enjoyed the first of what they no doubt hope will be many VMAs performances.

The boyband performed One Thing in between scooping trophies for Best New Artist, Best Pop Video and Most Share-Worthy Video.

Also on stage tonight was Frank Ocean who crooned Thinking About You with plenty of smoke machines to help out, and rapper 2 Chainz who performed Yuck and No Worries with Lil Wayne.

Green Day had been forced to cancel a performance days ago in Italy as frontman Billy Joe Armstrong was suffering a parasite-induced illness, but he was back on fine form tonight.

The band belted out their new single Let Yourself Go but made sure the performance itself was very much in the style of vintage Green Day.

The Video Music Awards will air in the UK on September 7 at 9pm on MTV.
